Fatal Accident at Apiti
Yesterday another of those accidents, which are only too frequent in districts where much bushfelliog has to be done, occurred at Apiti. A man named Her man Crawford, who was working with Mr P- McConnell, at about 2 o'clock bad cut down a tree, whick, rebounding in its fall, crushed the unfortunate man ■ either against the stump or on the ground. Assistance was promptly at hand and willing hands prepared a stretcher and conveyed the sufferer out of the bush. He was in intense agony and died at 7 30 in the evening at Mr Poole's hotel. Dr Mussen, of Birniing* ham, had been sent for but it was too late as he did not arrive till B.BU, however, he gave a certificate of tho otuiNO of death, and it is not likely nn imjncM will be held.
