LADIES, WAKE UP!
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — Permit me, through your valuable paper, to attempt te enlist the sympathies of the ladies of Feilding m a movement which should have their most ardent support and assistance. A short time ago the clergymen of Feilding called a pnblic meeting for the purpose of forming a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The attempt was a success and a society formed, but what astonished me most was the almost total absence of the fair sex ; only two or three being present, and these, not wishing to appear singular, retired. It may be that | the excitement of the Franchise question has obscured the mental vision of all our ! leading lady lights to matters of smaller I import. That question is now settled definitely, and to their satisfaction, so I sincerely hope that in the interest of humanity, and of helpless dumb brutes, and for the credit and honor of their sex in Feilding, they will come forward and endeavour te make the Society the success it deserves to be, actuated, as the promoters are, by the most humane and philanthropic instinct which fills mankind — the protection of the helpless. Woman is by nature endowed more largely with the divine attribute of pity than man, and to take part in public matters is no longer considered derogatory. Therefore, I ask them to assist a movement whose motives every right>thinking person must admire* I am, etc., ;
