CHOKED BY A PIECE OF MEAT. (?EB PBESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunbdin, October 16 Daniel McArthur, an inmate of the Beneyolent Institution, died to-day through being choked by a piece of meat. He was confined to bed and had some curried meat taken to him by the warder, who c&lled for assistance as soon j ai he saw what had occurred, but the ! man was dead. Deceased was 37 years of age and had no friends in the colony. This Day. At the City Court to morrow Richard Horrebank will be charged with distributing printed papers without an imprint. They had reference to Sir Robert Stout's I connection with the Women's Franchise. Auckland. October 16 At the inquest on Buckley, killed on the Ellershe racecourse, a verdict was returned of accidental death, with a rider expressing the opinion that wire netting should have been put up on the racecourse. Percy Monk, son of Mr Richard Monk, ex-M.H.R., was gored by a wild cow at Knukapakapa. The horn struck him in the calf of the leg, lacerating the muscles and the arteries, and he narrowly escaped bleeding to death before a rude turni* quet was made by his comrades. Auckland, October 15. A number of spurious half-crowns are in circulation composed of white metal. It takes a six-penny and a three-penny bit additional to make its weight equal to a true half-crown. The* are stated to hare been sent from Germany for circulation in the colonies. Hawera, This Day. John Milne, cattle dealer, was adjudicated a bankrupt this morning on the creditors' petition. The liabilities are stated at nearly a thousand pounds, and the assets praatically nil. Wellington, This Day. The Colonial Secretary leaves for Dunedin to-morrow, and will be absent for a week. Ciibistchuhch, October 16. A committee appointed by the Religious Textbook in Public Schools Association resolved to recommend the asso ciation to adopt the fourth Scripture lesson-book of the Irish National Society. This Day. The unemployed deputation from the meeting waited on the Minister of Labor this morning. Ho declined to attend tho adjuurued meeting. He characterised the statement at the public lueutinj,' as untruthful, and he said he would explain his conduct at a meetiDg to be called by him at his own time.
