Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
_ . The adjourned meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals wae held iv the Foresters' Hall last evening. The attendance was small, owing, no doubt, to the meeting being held an ( evening sooner than was intended, and . many not being aware of the fact, How- J ever, a considerable amount of business was transacted, such as election of < officers, etc. The Society may now be . said to be fairly on its feet , The Rev. Mr Murray was voted to the , chair, and stated that the business of the ■ meeting was to receive the report of the ( committee appointed to draw up the rules , of the Society, to receive the report of the ( canvassing committee, and to elect officers. , He thonght that the small attendance . I proved the necessity of pushing on the election of officers, etc., so that they could < work the matter up. Although they were beginning in a small way he hoped they J would be able to do much good. , The minutes of the previous meeting j were read and adopted. The canvassing committee reported having obtained forty-five members, the ( majority of whom had paid up their sub- , scriptions , The rules of the Wellington Branch of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals '< Society having been read over by the Secretary, it was decided to adopt the , j same, with the exception of two slight j alterations. , I It was decided to elect His Excellency , the Governor as Patron of the Society, . subject to his approval. The election of officers was then pro- j ceeded with as follows : — President, Mr ; F. Y. Lethbridge ; vice-presidents, Revs. , Murray and Clements, and Messrs Ed. Goodbehero and Sherwill ; hon. solicitors, Messrs Reade and Richmond ; secretary, Mr Reade ; treasurer, Rev. Innes Jones ; committee— Dr Monckton, Messrs A. R. Allan, T. Chamberlain, W. G. Haybittle, C. L. Maclean, J. G. Richardson, and W. G. Shearer. It was resolved that the number of the committee be nine, and that two vacancies be left for the present. The appointment of Inspector and other matters were left until the first meeting of the committee, which takes place in Mr Reade 's office on Thursday evening next, at 7.30. Tho usual vote of thanks to tbe chair terminated the meeting.
