The Feilding Star. Published Daily. THURSDAY, OCT. 12, 1893. VICTORIAN FROZEN MEAT TRADE.

The Victorians, or at least that section of them who are interested in pastoral pursuits, have at last awakened to the importance of tlie meat freezing trade as developed by New Zealand. The advisableness of finding a profitable outlet for the surplus stock of Australia, and the means of doing so has therefore become patent to them. It is stated a company is about to be formed with the object of erecting the required works in connection with Victorian interests and a proposal has been submitted to the Government to erect freezing works in a convenient locality. The contemplated company is to be brought out under the auspices, among others, of four large pastoral i companies, and the Melbourne Argus I looks upon this an a good sign be- , 1 cause it secures the co-operation of | powerful institutions which will all j have a common object iv view. The four cum panics named arc the Australasian Mortgage and Agency Company, Goldsborough Mort and Company, Dalgety and Company, and the Australian Land and Finance Company, all institutions whose very existence depends on the prosperity of sheepfarmers. Most important of all, the promoters intend to rely solely on private eflort iv the matter of supplying the required capital. They have been warned by the universal failure of all companies which have neglected to adopt this prudent rule. Arrangements have, so far, been made with the railway authorities to carry freights for a term of years at a payable rate. The site of the proposed freezing works is fixed at Deniliquin as the centre of Southern Riyerina, but if, other tilings being equal, it could be fixed within the Victorian border, the proposals would be more acceptable. Under any circumstances, however, it is quite probable that a number of freezing works will eventually be required in Victoria, as well as in lliverina, and that the whole of them will find their natural shipping outlet at Melbourne. As the whole of Europe may now l>e .said to ofier an open market for the frozen meat trade, this new competitor is not likely to do any harm to the New Zealand producers, more especially as the latter are capable of growing a somewhat better class of sheep than those raised iv Australia, while our climate has also advantages not possessed by the farmer.
