Attempt to Rob the Colonial Bank

♦ PLUCKY CONDUCT OP A BANK OFFICER. At half-past nine on Saturday night the Feildiog branch of the Colonial Bank was burglariously entered by a man named Jos. Knight. From particulars to hand it appears that Mr O. fVakelin, accountant of the bank, who is just re* covering from a serious illness, entered his bedroom to retire to rest, having previously been into the public office and taken the revolver out or the teller's desk, which is the usual custom. When he entered the bedroom he was considerably surprised to see a man in the room ransack mc the chest of drawers, he having gained an entrance through the bedroom window. Instantly be pointed the revolver at the stranger's head, and at the same time requested him to hold up his hands. This request the man immediately complied with. Mr WakVlin then ordered him to march out of the bank and to the police station, where he waa securely locked up. On being searched a stone mounted in a sling was found in his pocket. Oa being questioned as to his reason for having the stone, the man stated that he carried it for the purpose of breaking into s jeweller's shop. The affair has caused quite a sensation, and has been the talk of the town. Mr Wakelin deserves great credit for the presence of mind shown, especially when it is remembered he is recovering from aa attack of typhoid fever. At eleven o'clock this morning, the prisoner, who was charged under the name of Joseph Knight, was brought before Messrs Sherwill and KKton, J.P'a,, and, on the application of Constable Tuohy, the case was remanded until Thursday next, at the same hour. The Court was crowded with spectators.
