Social at Kiwitea.
♦ — A social in connection with the Wesleyans in the Kiwitea circuit was held in the Kiwitea Hall, on Tuesday evening last. Preceding this was the quarterly meeting of the circuit which was held in the afternoon. The meeting was well attended, and .closed at 6 80. Mr Gny, of Apiti, on behalf of the trustees, obtained permission to proceed with work connected with the building of a church in that township. The public meeting or social commenced at 7.30, and was a great success. The Rev Mr Stewart, of Kiwi* tea presided, and opened the meeting with a few choice remarks. A quartette was then given by friends from Birmingham. Mr Birks then addressed the meeting during which he thanked the friends in the district for the kindness and sympathy manifested during his stay among them. A musical selection by Mr Barnes followed. Mr Keall, president of conference, gave an excellent address. An anthem by the Birmingham friends followed. Messrs Baynes, Barlow, and Miss Lowes gave a musical selection which was encored. Mr Birks sang "The Little Hero," and Mr Moss gave a recitation in admirable style, which was greatly enjoyed by the audience. Music and speaking were now laid aside for a time, and the friends had a very pleasant half hour to themselves. Refreshments of excellent quality were handed round. The good things were very kindly provided by Kiwitea ladies — viz. Mesdames Perry, Taylor, Jones, and W. Stewart. The second half of the programme was commenced with a song by Miss Battle, which was exceedingly well rendered, and received an encore; Miss Battle then gave "No Sir." The Rev Mr Watkin, of Sandon, delivered an address peculiar to himself which took the audience by storm. Evidently Mr Watkin is a favourite with the young people. Miss P. Lowes next gave a song " La Serenada," which was accompanied by Mr Barlow on ihe flute. This was one of the finest pieces of the evening. A recitation by Mr Mobs concluded the programme. Mr Guy then proposed a vote of thanks to the, ladies for their assistance. This was seconded by Mr Any on. Mr Birks moved a hearty vote of thanks to the Rev Mr Stewart for presiding. They were all pleased to see him and hoped he would favor them with his presence on some future occasion. The singing of the Doxologjr concluded one of the finest social meetings held in the Kiwitea.
