DIPHTHERIA.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE STAR. Sir, — I think it is the duty of everyone to make public whatever knowledge he may possess of anything tending to the relief or cure of this terrible disease, therefore I will ask you to insert tho following for what it may be worth. When in Palmerston North, a few days ago, in conversation with a resident, he remarked that there wero many cases of diphtheria there at the present time, but that they had a man among them who could cure it even when doctors had failed. He told me it was a Chinaman of the name of James Wan Quin, who has a fruit shop about 100 yards from the Square on the road to the railway station. I interviewed Mr Quin and found him an intelligent man who spoke excellent English. He told me that diphtheria was very common in China but they never dreaded it, as it was so easily cured by the means they used. He showed me the dried herbs from which the powder is made, and also a sample of the powder which looks like cayenne pepper. He further showed me the lotion to be applied to the neck on flannel, and of which he keeps a large bottle on hand. The powder is blown through a quill or paper rolled round a pencil into a cylinder on to the throat and at the same time the lotion is applied outwardly. He says he can tell diphtheria at a glance, and if asked will visit anyone either in Palmerston or elsewhere, and administer his cure only charging expense of railway and cost of medicine which he said was 3s, for a good supply of both kinds. I am, etc., Pro Bono Public. FeiJding, October 3rd, 1893.
