A PLAGUE-STRICKEN STEAMER.
THE MATABELE TROUBLE. (PKR PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Rome, September 29. An Italian mail steamer has arrived at Sardinia, an island in tbe Mediterranean, South of Corsica, and reports tbat 144 deaths from cholera occurred during her voyage from Brazil, and that 17 of those on board were suffering from the epidemic. Capetown, September 29. News from tbe disturbed districts states tbat Impis are Hearing tbe British South Africa Company's station at Tati. It is also stated that Commander Raaf's column will march on Bulawayo (King Lobengula's Kraal) in tbe event of the Matabele attack being carried ont. London, Sept. 29. The Rev. Doctor Jowett is reported to be dying City men highly commend tbe financial proposals of the Premier of X S.W. Tenders for tbe loan will close on Thursday, and the final instalments of 25 per cent will be payable on January 22nd. Six months' interest will he paid on January 1. The loan is favorably received on the Exchange, and is already at one quarter premium. The Rome correspondent of tbe Daily Chronicle says tbe prospects of peace being maintained between France and Italy are disturbing, and much anxiety is felt at the Vatican upon tbe subject. The conference of Chambers of Commerce has passed a resolution that tbe Navy is insufficient to protect merchant vessels in time of war, and demands that it shall be placed on a thoroughly effective footing.
