SUSPENSION OF ANOTHER BUILDING SOCIETY. THE VICTORIAN LOAN. SULLIVAN TO MEET STANBURY. A LION-TAMER IN" TROUBLE. THREATENING LETTERS. (PEK PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Sydney, Sept. 27. Ernest Broad, of the firm of FergUßon and Board, has been arrested on a charge of mis-appropriating a cheque for £2650. the accused was remanded for a week. The Newcastle Permanent Building Society has suspended payment. The cause is attributed to the continued withdrawal of deposits, It is said that little of the Victorian loan was converted, as there was some difficulty in notifying debenturo holders owing to ignorance of the addresses of the latter. Debenture holders threaten the Bank with proceedings for closing before they had a cbauce of converting. The Bank states that they rigidly adhered to the prospectus, and was surprised at tbo success of the loan ; otherwise they would have fixed an earhor closiug date. About £40,000 additional was subscribed yesterday. The Times asserts that before the prospectus wus issued :i syndicate had arranged to take £1,000,000 on condition that the lists were closed when the amount was subscribed, and that the brokers acting for the Banks covered the balance, depriving debenture holders of the promised advance. Tom Sullivan, of JSew Zealand, who recently defeated George Bubear for the championship of England, states he is prepared to row Jim Staubury, champion of the world, in England, This Day. In the Assembly Mr Morton (for Mr Want) moved for leave to introduce a Bill to repeal the Parliamentary Representatives' Allowance. The Government, the Opposition, and the labour members united in their objection to the motion which was lost by 57 to 7. Humphries, tbe lion«tamer in Fitzperald's circus, was terribly injured by the animals at Albury. His clothes were torn off and his arms, body, and legs, terribly bitten and mangled in the scuffle, which lasted 8 minutes, Hobabt, This Day. Mr Clark moved a vote of want of confidence in the Government over the Income Tax Bill. The debate was ad» journed till Friday. Brisbane, This Daj. Detective Gabriel, who was responsible for the arrest of tbe Mount Morgan gang of thieves, has received several letters threatening him with death. One of the principal witnesses also receired several letters.
