The Feilding Star. Published Daily. MONDAY, .SEPT. 25, 1893. THE RAILWAY BILL.

The policy of the Govern men t, it is well known, has not found favor iv tbo eyes of tho farming or mercuutile communities, and the men composing them have not hesitated to protes 1 ; whero opportunity was given th^m. They had, very properly, grave objections to the Railway Bill, the main objects of which appear to be to place patronage in the hands of Ministers, and to give the Premier his revenge on the Railway Commissioners. At the third reading of the Bill Mr Seddon managed to have a parting shot which, iv our opinion, will bo remembered very much to the disadvantage of himself and his purty (if he has any left) at the approaching elections. Mr Seddon said that the Chambers of Commerce did not represent the commercial community, nor the Agricultural Societies the farming community. Although this is simply nonsense, and a display of astounding ignorance aud prejudice, it is nevertheless an insult to the men who are engaged in the functions of production and distribution. Mr Seddon could not have had in his mind, when he ajave utterance to this gratuitous insult to win the applause of the "unthinking multitude," that such tactics were now utterly useless, because women's franchise has altered the whole phase and front of them, and made them of no effect. There are very few mercantile men or farmers in this colony who are not infinitely superior in integrity and usefulness to thoir fellows, to the professional politicians who are now the curse of the country.
