GRAVE POSITION OF AFFAIRS.
[Per Press Association. | London, September 20. Mr Buxton, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, admitted the position in Mashonoland to be very grave. If Lobengula attacked the British Settlers' Company he would be justified in taking offensive action. The general impression of the public is that the vacillating action of the Marquis of Ripon is likely to encourage Lobengula. Mr Buxton, in a statement upon affairs in South Africa, contended that it was imperative to resist the chance of incurring a costly war through ilie too hasty action of the colonists. TIIO Government would not permit them to act on the aggressive unless Sir If. Loch con* sen ted. The Government intend strengthening the position in Bechuaualaud. The Government hold the JUntish South Africa Company responsible for the defence of Mashonaland, but will not allow them to act on the offensive.
