The Chemis Case
[Per Proas Association] Wellington, September 18. A deputation composed of eighteen members of the House of Representatives and six Italian residents of Wellington waited on the Premier this afternoon with reference to the case of the convict, Louis Chemis. Mr Geo. Fisher, Italian Consul, pointed out that the case was so surrounded with doubts that the late Governor had no difficulty iv deciding to commute the death sentence. The Premier, in reply, 6aid the matter was one of serious moment. The petition reflected great credit on those concerned in its preparation, and Govern aient would deal with it in Cabinet. Government would fully probe the matter. He pointed out that if an Appeal Court for criminal cases had existed in this colony, there would have been no cause for the dissatisfaction which had arisen in connection with this case, and he felt that the sooner the law was altered in this respect the better it would be.
