Another Conviction of Salvation Army Officers.
(PKH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Doxkdin, September 18. At Milton to-day, before Mr Hawkins, E.M., John Keen (butcher), Jas. M Fountain (confectioner), Geo. Ashmore (laborer), Edward Bngden (laborer), and Matthews (Salvation Army officer), were charged, on the information of the Borough Clerk, with unlawfully taking part in a procession on 10th September in the Borough of Milton, without having previously abtained permission from the Borough Council, contrary to section 56 of Bye-law 2. Defendants were unrepresented. Matthews, McVikar, and two Keens were further charged with playing instruments on the same date. Matthews contended the bye-law was unfair and un* reasonable, and relied on the decision given by the Chief Justice in England. His Worship said the decision of the Chief Justice had been held expressly wrong on appeal. He (Hawkins) was in duty bound to convict on the evidence as the Governor's clemency in the previous case may have led defendants to think they could defy the law. He would make the penalties low. Matthews, as a man of authority, and John Keen, previously convicted, would be find 20s or fourteen days, the others 5s or seven days on the procession charges. On the second information, Matthews and Keen were fined iJOs shillings each or fourteen days, the others were fined ys each or seven days, terms of imprisonment in default of payment to be concurrent.
