Mrs Matson, a candidate for Parneil ward in the City Council, was beaten by 4 votes. Wellington, September J3. Next sitting of the Court of Appeal is fixed for Wellington, October 16th. It is notified in the Gazette that payment of capitation allowance to Education Boards for quarter ending on 30th September, now current, shall be according to the working average attendance of the preceding quarter, as the working average is defined by order in Council, dated oth July, 1887. Chkistchukcii, September 11. In the Supreme Court to-day the ease Clark v. Press Company, claim £200, was heard. The plaintiff is the Lyttelton Harbormaster, and the action was for a libel contained in an anonymous letter which appeared iv the Press, the defendants having refused to divulge the name of the writer. The plaintiff obtained a verdict for £25 and costs.
