The Feilding Star, Published Daily. TUESDAY, SEPT. 12, 1893. THE COLONY.
Ik an article on the colonies, in the London Times of July 21st, the writer points out that " New Zealand has fortunately escaped the worst ravages of the cyclone which burst over the neighbouring; continent, and, thanks largely to haying taken timely warning from the sharp experience of a few years ago, the public finances of the colony are in what may fairly be described as a flourishing condition. The good resolution taken by Sir H. Atkinson, and adopted by his successors, is still maintained, aud there can be no doubt that the announcement made by Mr J. G. "Ward, the Colonial Treasurer, in presenting his Budget statement, that for the present the colony will make no attempt to raise money on the London market will have an excellent effect on the financial position of tbe colony." It is interesting to note that the memory of the wise policy of the late Sir H. Atkinson is still greon in the high places of England, but whether the present New Zealand Ministry will feel gratified at being informed that Sir H. Atkinson's policy "is still maintained " by them is another question. The Times further says that Mr Ward was able to announce some small reductions in taxation. There must be a mistake here, because tbe policy of the present Ministry has been in the direction of grinding every possible farthing out of the people by direct and indirect taxation.
