The Palmerston Cup was increased from £200 to £250, and the President's Handicap from £100 to £150. Several small increases were made in tho other races. To-day the Colonists' Land and Loan Corporation Limited, sold tho corner section opposite to Mr Carthew's shop, to a local businoss man, who will erect two shops thereon. We are informed by Mr Hamilton, the purchaser, that the new buildings will be commenced forthwith, the timber having been ordered and all other arrangements made. To-day Mr David Younger announces that he has leased tho Manchester Hotel stables for a term of years, and will commence business on Monday next. As Mr Younger is an experienced man, well known to everyone in the district, and highly respected for his integrity and industry, we are confident he will achieve success iv his new line of business. A brother of Mr Pickering's, tho but* cher, working at Mr Adsott's sawmills, mot with a serious accident whilst bushfolhng this morning. Mr Downey read his essay of " Reminiscences of a goldinining town," which was both interesting and amusing. Mr Curty was also successful with his composition on " Lines," which was well appreciated and excited much laughter. Both gentlemen were accorded well earned votes of thanks. On Thursday next, Mr Gould will have for his subject " The Redemption of Christ."
