The afternoon sitting of the House was taken up with a lengthy discussion on the report of the Goldfields Committee, and the answering of questions. The West Coast Settlement Act Amendment Bill was read a third time and passed. The Post Office Act Amendment Bill passed through Committee without material amendment and was read a third time and passed, The Civil Service Officers Guarantee Bill was committed and passed through its final stages. On the motion that the Shops and Shop Assistants Bill be committed, Mr Duthie moved an amendment that the Bill be committed that day three mouths. A long debate ensued, tho Bill being strongly opposed by Messrs Fish, Eolleston, Scobie Mackenzie, Saunders, Buckland, Wrieht, Camcross, E. Thompson, and several others. Mr Duthie's amendment was nega- * tived by 20 to 12, and the Bill was committed, progress being immediately reported, and the House rose at 2.10 a.m.
