THE APITI RANGER.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sik. — In your report of the meeting o* ratepayers, at Apiti, held on Friday the 25th August, I notice one little paragraph at the end of it which says : "It was decided to leave over the question of a ranger for the present." I should think so. Why should we begin worrying and harrassing each other by appointing a man to liye at our expense, and make trouble and annoyance all for nothing. Not that I should say that, because he would be a smart man, who ever caught a ranger doing anything from sheer benevolence. You, Mr Editor, will have read of that man who to avenge himself on his fellows in Old England made up his mind to keep a turnpike. Well, my idea is the same, a man who takes the billet of a ranger does not do it for love of his fellow men or for profit. He is soured against the world, or the people round him. In a new settlement of course the roads cost a lot of money, but that money comes out of our own pockets, and if our stray stock does a bit of harm nobody but ourselves is a bit the worse. I dare say some people will think what I say is neither more not less than high treason, but you will agree with me that punishing industrous settlers, that a ranger may may live on them, is left handed wisdom anyway. I am, etc., Apiti Ratkfayek. Apiti, August 30, 1893.
