DEPORTING CRIMINALS.
Tun Government have taken a wise stop in the direction of checking the progress of crime in the colony. It has been notorious for sometime past that with the influx of population from Australia an undesirable class also came over to prey upon the people of New Zealand. They began operations in the principal towns first, and then extended their patronage to the country districts. Success did not always wait on their enterprise, for many of them were arrested aud punished by being put in prison, where they were maintained at the expense of the ratepayers. However pleasant this may be for the criminal classes, I yet the extra expenditure thus made necessary, has tried the patienoe of the Colonial Treasurer who, with hisI colleagues, has struck out a new line and ordered that " spielers " and others of the same kidney, who have fallen into the clutches of the law, be shipped away out of the colony altogether. The first consignment left Wellington yesterday when the police shipped bock to Sydney two or three of the fraternity who had beon before the Court on charges of vagrancy, and who were released on the condition that they left the colony. It is to be hoped that this example will have the effect of preventing for the future, at least in some degree, criminals in the other colonies looking upon New Zealand as either a haven of refuge or a happy huuting ground.
