' When charging the Grand Jury this morning the Chief Justice referred to the heavy nature of the calendar, and said that crime was also apparently on the increase in several other centres in the Colony. Hi« Honor's remarks were brief, and confined to tho charges of rape and an attempt to defraud an insurance company. The young man Robert Bleakley pleaded guilty to the larceny of a bicycle in Wellington. Ho was sentenced to twelve months. Alexander Ross, aged 62, against whom there were several previous convictions, pleaded guilty to breaking into a private house, in Wellington, and stealing a quantity of wearing apparel, and was sentenced to two years hard labour. When this offence was committed tho accused had only been a few days out of gaol. Haskill, for forging and uttering n cheque for Jt'l3, pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to twelve months. John Reginald, alias Crawford, on three charges of passing valueless cheques, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years' hard labor.
