August 24 At a meeting of the Court Zealandia of Foresters, a resolution was carried unanimously that the Court news with alarm the compulsory clauses of the Civil Serrants' Insurance Bill. TheWaikato Floods Belief Committee despatched fir* tons of flour to»day to Mercer to be distributed by the Her W. Gittos, Wesleyan Native Missionary, amongst the destitute natives. This Day. The Rev. Mr Gitto.«, who visited the Waikato natives, says their supplies are exhausted, and unless relief is granted they will not get through the winter. The natives, he said, were eating fern roots. At three native settlements they were unable to place a meal, even of potatoes, before him. Five tons of flour were sent today for the relief of the sufferers. Wellington, August 24. The police have received intelligence that a man named McDowall, who has been perpetrating a series of swindles in Melbourne under the guije of a clergyman, was arrested ihero. It is believed he is the same man for whom a warrant was issued here a little while ago on a charge of forgery at Mastertou. The reconstruction of the New Zealand Chess Club is completed. The next Congress will be held at Dunedin iv the beginning of December. Next sitting of the Court of Appeal is fixed for September 15th. This Day. A man named George Evans, a plumber, who was joined with a man named Bailey on a charge of stealing homing pigeons, to-day attempted to commit suicide by swallowing spirits of salts Evan's condition is serious, and it is doubtful if he will recover. He is about 45 years of age, a married man. At the inquest on tho fisherman named Lougdon who was drowned at Otaki the evidence showed the boat capsized near the shore. The deceased managed to get on the boat which drifted to sea. When the boat was recovered two hours after the accident Lougdon was found hanging to the boat, but quite dead. Hokitika, August 25. Mrs Catherine was committed for trial for attempting to burn down tho Occidental Hotel. A heavy nor' -west gale is blowing, with rain. A Dunedin man. named J. San<l«n:iH>, wa» attacked by larrikins last night, knocked down and kicked. He was rescued by a passer by. Most of tho offenders are known.
