Owing lo slips on lhe railway line near Matarawa, joi-te .day's morning train from Wanganui wns unable to gel through, and t» c enrly irain from Pn! merston could only proceed as far as Turokma. The midday express left Pulmerston punctually, and got safely to Matarawa, but it was as laion* \ p.m. before any through passengers from Wanganui were able lo rosumo tlieir journey southward*. It is expected that the slip near Matarawa will take some considerable tune to repair. Although a severe storm was experienced between Palmerston and Wellington no damage to the permanent way U reported. Trains north of Wnnganui were delayed oa acconnt of slips near Kai Iwi, and large gangs of men hay* had to be put on at that place, and nt Fordell. in order to clear the line. During the recent rainfall over 1} inches of rain was registered at Wanganui. lv addition to tbe breach on tho northeast aide of tbo Warwick street bridge the backwash lias scoured out and partly undermined tbe appioach on tho southwest aide. Directly tbo waters go down tbi* datnugo can be quickly repaired.
