The Feilding Star. AND OROUA COUHTY GAZETTE. MONDAY, AUGUST 21, 1893. SEWAGE.
Fkom the circumstance that tho town lies very flat, and with but little fall, we thiuk the Council should at once, und before tho germinating days of spring arrive, mako some commonsense arrangement for tho disposal of sowago— sixpence a wook would provide tho means for each house, aud thaukful indeed would each one be to havo it removed by a dustman, who only needs a proper tank. The contract would prove a little fortune to anyone with energy to utilise the sewage for cultivation. It needs nothing but a resolution of tho Council to make its adoption universal, and so effectual, and worth whilo some one entering into it. Should the contractor prove to be a suitable man he might also be engaged and well paid as inspector of premises, when he might assist and advise each householder how to koep his place sweet and clean. The bye-law concerning night soil should, without a week's delay, be oxtended to all tho main streets, and every person should be compelled to provide tanks at their premises. These also should be subject to supervision and periodical cleansing by tbe inspector. An industrious man, or oven two, would find very profitable em- ! ployment at a trifling individual expense to tho residents, the town would bo heulthy, tho ratepayers would be saved tho danger and expense of a large druinage schomo for many yoars, and the only persons not benefitted would bo tho chemists und the doctors. It is raonatrous to think that the best provision for housewator, soapsuds, etc., is now to trench it at your back door by continually turning over tbo soil upon it. What must the worst be 'i The man who keeps the surface clean by using, covered drains merely fosters germs of disease iv a dark hot bod.
