The Barque Achievement Ashore.

To-day's Times says quite a sensation was caused in Wellington last night by the receipt of the news that the barque Achievement had gone ashore in Worser Bay. The Achievement, it will be remembered, arrived here on the 4th inst. from Liverpool after a voyoge of 172 days. She brought 961 tons of general cargo for this port and Dunedin, and having discharged the Wellington portion of her cargo, consisting of 487 tons, she left for Dunedin yesterday, being towed out by the Duco. She cleared the Heads about noon, and towards 5 o'clock she was some five miles off the land to the south-east. A southerly gale then sprang up, and the wind blew with great force. Captain Rees decided to return to Worser Bay for shelter, and she brought up near the Binnacle Rock about 8 o'clock. The anchor chain parted, and she drifted helplessly on to the rocks abreast of the pilot station at Worser Bay. At midnight she was lying broadside on, and was rolling heavily. The captain and crew were all safe, and were on board the ship. At 2 30 a m. the sea had gone down and the ship was lying steady. [Per Press Association.] Wellington, This Day. The tug Duco went out to the barque Achievement and got a line to her, but the tide foiling is unlikely to get her off for sometime. The sea has gone down anJ the yessel is steady. The barquo had nearly 400 tons of original cargo for Dunedin aboard. Later. The Achievement is on a sandy bottom, and in no danger. An attempt to get her off failed, but as soon as an anchor and a chain are taken out another attempt will be made.
