PUBLICANS PREPARING FOR THE FRAY. ( i-«« i-KEsa Aaaoc/ATIOJT. 7 CIIBISTCUI'HCH, August 15. A conference of those interested in the i liquor trade was held to day. There was a large attendance, including rcprescntatires from all parts of Canterbury, and Captain Popham, President of the Can* terbury Licenced Victuallers' Association took the chair. Tho Chairman, in opening tho proceedings, read a letter from the Rer F. W. Isitt, asking for permission to be present at the meeting. The meeting unanimously declined to grant Mr Isitt 'a request. The Chairman morod, " That in the opinion of this meetiuc, the intention of a portion of tho community to introduces prohibitiyc measures should be strenuously opposed by the Government, as being an infringement of the natural inalienable rights of the people of New Zealaud." Tho mo* tion was carried unanimously. It was also resolved, " That this meetiuc pledges itself to support only those eaudidates at the forthcoming elections who will oppose tho Direct Veto and Prohibition." .— . — i— — ■ — — —
