The River of Death
This is what that " big open sewer," Chicago river, is called in a despatch of July 19. Its state during the last few days, according to this telegram , threatens to depopulate all the adjacent districts on both aides of the sluggish stream of foul currents. The river, stagnant under the torrid sun, has reached a condition never before touched within tho remembrance of tho oldest inhabitants. Luckily, the fair grounds are some distance away. The foul stench from the river has forced scores of men to leave their positions in the warehouses along tho docks and has placed on the sick list do/ens from big wholesale houses. Tho odour has become so terrible that even tho stevedores are sickening under it. In the wholesale houses abutting on the river almost a score of men have succumbed to the horrible stench. Great and constant complaints are made, and unless the authorities act promptly the public health will be greatly jeopardised.
