THE PRICE OF BREAD.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sin,—ln reply to " Stall of Life," his quotations of the price of flour are misleading to the' public of Feilding. The best brands of southern roller flour cost in Feilding from £9 to £9 7s 66\* which is mostly used by the Feilding bakers. The flour I am baking to-day cost me £9 5s 6d. He states that the price of bread is the same as when flour was LlO to Ll2. This is a direct falsehood. I doubt very much if the report is true as to the price of bread in Wanganui being 2d the 21b loaf. Wanganui bakers have been charging 3Jd cash and 4d booked the 21b loaf. In support of this see advertisement in the Wanganui Chronicle reducing bread to 8d cash and 3Jd booked oa Ist Angus*. Feildiug bakers' price is 3d for the 21b loaf booked, notwithstanding they have to pay 10s per ton more for their flour. No baker can deliver bread in Feilding, made from the best flour, at 2d the 21b loaf, without a loss to himself or his creditors. This virtually means that the baker who supplies anyone with broad at 2d the 21b loaf he is assisting them to obtain a living. Judging from " Staff of Life's" letter ho is one of the class who wants that assistance. 1 think he has applied to the wrong quarter. He had better try the Charitable Aid Board, which, no doubt, will give him the usual rations. I am not surprised to see he was ashamed to sign his own name to so mcun and contemptible a letter. I nm, etc., Chhistophkb Matthews. '
