Manchester Road Board.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was *held on Saturday last. Present — Wardens Lethbridge, (chairman), Booth, Pearce, Conway, Purkiss, and Wheeler. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was dealt with : — From the Secretary Upper Taonui School, drawing the Board's attention to the state of the water-table fronting the School. From H. Pryce-Jones, Rangitawa, stating that he was strongly in favor of the requisition sent to the Board by German settlers living on Paskis' road, asking that the road may be made. The writer considered that an effort ought to be made to make this road passible as far as the last settler's house, and if the county rate should have to be struck next year in the Board's district, in order to adjust its finances, he would not complain. From the Engineer's Department of the Government Railway, asking for a description of the boundaries of the Board's district. From the Palmerston Borough Council, referring to a resolution passed at the meeting of the Municipal Association in Wellington during 1892, to the effect that, "Interest at 100/o per annum be added to all rates three months in arrear after they become due," and asking the Manchester Road Board to assist in obtaining an amendment in the " Rating Act 1892," by obtaining the support of the member for the district. . From R. Lloyd and M. Henagan, on behalf of settlers on Henagan's line, drawing the Board's attention to the absolute necessity of erecting a bridge over Stoney Creek, as during many months in the year it is quite impossible to get sheep over the creek. The cost o£ such work would not be great, and the settlers would willingly contribute £10 towards it, if the Board would start the job at once. From the Rev J. M. Dovenish, of Ashurst, stating he intended to present a number of trees for planting in Mulgrave Street, Ashurst, and asking the Board to consent to the same. From James Quarrie, Halcombe, asking permission to close a cross road through his property leading from the Sandon - Halcombe road to Knorp street. From the Stock Inspector, forwarding leaflets re the Californian thistle. From S. T. Hunt and Co., Ashurst, complaining of a large hollow being left in the footpath fronting ins section. I From M. Henaghan, requesting the Board to inform occupiers in the Scandinavian Block that they must clear obstructions off the road. From D. Leach, Bunnythorpe, undertaking to fill up and repair ruts made by his cart. From the Survey Office, re the removal of the Ohingaiti trig. From Dr. Sorley, reporting three cases of measles in the Board's district. From D. Henderson, Colyton, applying for a renewal of his slaughtering licence. From the Palmerston Hospital Board, forwarding £68 8s od amount of charitable aid expenditure due to the Manchester Road Board ; from the same, stating that the proportion of expenditure due from this Board in respect of charitable aid purposes is £108 14s 9d at 3s in the £1000 of rateable value. From the Audit Inspector, stating that the sum of £5 is due to the Controller General for auditing the Board's accounts for the year ending March 31st, 1893. From the Treasury, requesting payment of £642 14s lid, being half year's interest at 50/o per annum on £25,7Q9 12s Id. From the Land and Income Tax Department forwarding subsidy of £81 14s lOd. From Messrs Hunt and others requesting that a part of Winchester street, Ashurat, fronting sections 1, 2, and 3, may be metalled, and agreeing either to pay £ for £, or petitioners to pay the cost and the amount to be returned when the Board is in funds. From Messrs Voss and 13 other ratepayers living in Halcombe, drawing the Board's attention to the state of the road leading to their respective properties, which is almost impassable since the recent heavy rains. DEPUTATIONS. Mr Pryce-Jones and others, waited upon the Board, with a request that repairs might be carried out on Jones' road, as in places, vehicles sunk in almost up to their axles. The Board undertook to give the matter their early attention. Two German settlers living on Paskis' road, also waited on the Board, urging the absolute necessity that the road in question should be formed and metalled. In this case, the Board promised to look into the matter. Proposed by Warden Pearce, seconded by Warden Booth, That a slaughtering licence be granted to D. Henderson as requested. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Purkiss, seconded by Warden Wheeler, That the Engineer inspect and report on j the cost o£ making Paskis' road iifc for wheel traffic. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Booth, seconded by Warden Pearce, That the following names be placed on the rate roll:— That of A. E. and C. H. Silson in place of L. J. Lethbridge for part section 151, Mata ; that of Chas. Selby in lieu of Miss Selby for section 76, Ashurst; that of Jens Petersen in place of J. D. Belk for section 44, E ; that of Charles Browne in lieu of T. Nelson for part of section 8, Ashurst ; that of W. Dorrun in place of Thomas Nelson for section 6, Ashurst ; and that of Charles Lambert be substituted for Thomas Nelson's in rSspect of section 7, Ashurst. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Conway, seconded by Warden Pearce, That the Board cannot at present see their way to construct the bridge over Stoney Creek, as requested by Messrs Lloyd and Henaghan. — Carried. * Proposed by Warden Purkiss, seconded by Warden Wheeler, That Mr lluarrie be allowed to fence in the road between Knorp street and Sartdon road, provided he erect a swing gate, subject to the approval of the Board's Engineer. — Carried. the Board has much pleasure in grant ing Mr Devenish permission to plan trees in Mulgrave street, As hurst and is willing to grant the Ashurs residents permission to fence in tin trees. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Purkiss seconded by Warden Booth, That th member for this district be asked t support an amendment in the " Ratiuj Act," to the effect that interest at It per cent per annum be added to nl rates m arrear three months after thej fall due.— Carried. Proposed by Warden Pearco eecouded by the Chairman, That th( sum of 7s 6d per week be grantee Mrs Donaldson as charitable aid foi for the relief of her imbecile son.— Carried. In speaking to thu motion the proposer stated that the doctors had declined to certify Mrs Donaldson's soo as a patient for the Asylum Mr Entwistle had kept the mau foi four years and found it a great tax on his resources, as he was only a working man. The Engineer was instructed to attend to the water table iv front of the Taonui School. Proposed by Warden Conway, seconded by Warden Pearco, That tho Board is willing to m«tal Winchester street, opposite sections 1, 2, and 3, a width of 14 feet, on couditiou that £ for £ be paid in advance, in accordance with the Board's usual terms. — Carried. The Engineer stated that so far there were no slips of any consequence ou the Gorge road. Some discussion arose on the question of the medical men notifying cases of measles. The opinion of members was that it was unnecessary, but no motion was passed on tho subject. It was resolved that all outstanding rates should be sued for on and after the Ist of September. The monthly accounts were passed for payment and the Board adjouruod.
