Ashurst Notes

A horse belonging to Mr Pat Hanlon was being used on the cutting going down Wbibley's rond to the river, catting muck to fill up the holes washed out during the late rains. As a dray load was about to be tipped, the horse backed again and over he went down the side, the dray bounding over and over till it landed in tbe creek. Four men held the horse's head up clear of the water till an axe could be obtained to cut the shaft and releaso the poor animal. As soon ns he was clear, he rushed open-mouthed at one of the men and dashed off into the middle of the river, seemingly half mad with terror and pnio. A Mr Anderson was only saved from being drawn over with the dray by Mr Cavanagh, who, with great presence of mind, threw his arms around him. He himself was hurt, all the rest escaped. I hear that all the hotels are doing a good business, though I understand that tbe storekeepers do not consider it a good business. Considerable interest is being manifested in our Chess Club, many of our young fellows having joined, and are playing very well. Sir T. Sexton, one of the members, is well known in chess circles. Wo have a mounted constable to patrol our streets fltttasiontilly. Ashurst is such a decent little place" that the authorities consider it unnecessary to have a resident policeman. Our State SchooJ is closed for a fortnight to give time for the measles to work itself out,and no doubt the jelos ure will have to be applied for another fortnight. Mr G. H. Lucas is About finishing his house in the Pohangina township. Mr Moseley, from Oroua Bridgp, and Mr Cullen, of Palmerston, are also building.
