Wanganui Education Board
The Wanganuil Education Board met last Monday and Tuesday. Present — Messrs Notman (chairman), Sanson, Bridge, Fry, Baker, Rosi, and Hurley. Scholarships were awarded as follows : — Senior — Sharpe, £20; Biennerhasset, £20; Spurdle, £20; Tingey, £20; and Harris, £40 ; Junior — Blair, £20 ; Swin. burn, £40 ; aad Graham, £40. GENERAL. Campbelltown — From Miss A. Roberts, pupil teacher, resigning. Resignation accepted. Stanway— From Leonard McDonald, pupil teacher, resigning. Resignation accepted. Application from Mr Joseph Guylee for ' appointment at Stanway. Resolved, That Mr Guylee be informed that no vacancy offers. Palmerston — From Committee re assistant master, cadet, and removal of Owen Buckler ; resolved to forward the other names selected by the Executive Committee, with Clarkson's; also, That the Board could not alter the arrange* ment re Buckler, and that Miss McKenna be offered the cadetship at Terrace End. Cadotships — Applications for cadetahips wore received from Marion, Crofton, Wanganui, Bulls, Hunteryille, Collegestreet, Manaia, Ohingaiti, and Te Roti. C. Harris was appointed unclassed pupil teacher at Crofton ; A. McGonagle cadet at Ohingaiti ; Mary Hunger at Te Roti ; and other names were added to the list. The Secretary reported that he had forwarded to the Education Department certain information asked for. Re working averages, the Secretary stated that notwithstanding a circular had been sent to teachers on the 19th some had not replied. Decided, That these teachers be immediately written to as an intimation that the Board is dissatisfied with -their dilatoriness. Re returns showing amount of money expended during last three years for travelling expenses, the Secretary reported that the information had been forwarded to the Department. The Department requested the Board to ask their inspectors to communicate re proposed conference of inspectors. Surplus Desks.— Resolved, That sup« plus desks be brought into town from Bunnythorpe and Ashurst, and that those from Colyton be sent to Foxton. Timber Felling.— Applications from Mr O'Neill (through Mr Sommerville) to fall timber on Board's section (some seven milei from Birmingham).— -Granted on usual terms. Colyton.— Notice received re closing of school through prevalence of measles. Pohangina.— Request of subsidy of pound for pound for school buildings held over pending further information, Mr Fry to reoort. A request for a. ftirttor- so.V>si<lf from Cheltenham was read. It was resolved that the £5 already voted be granted. A letter was read from the- Aratiki Committee re state of the teacher's residence.—Resolved, That the Board was unable to provide a better residence. The Chairman read extracts from the Paraekaretu Express, m reference to a
school at Ohingaiti, to the effect that the Government had offered to advance the Wanganui Board, money to meet the «• pense of the erection of a school at Ohingaiti, and that the Board was responsible for delay. After discussion, it was resolved that as this reference was not in accordance with tacts, the article be referred to the Minister of Education, with a request for an explanation. Wanganui Educational Institute—Mr Bridge called attention to the tact that Bince the last meeting of the Board the Wanganui Educational Institute had held a meeting and a conversazione, at which the Chairman bad presided. He did not think it was hardly right, considering that it was not so long ago that members of the Wanganui Institute had raised a cry of a reign of terror all over the island without any real cause. The Rev Mr Ross did not think the matter should have been mentioned. Mr Fry saw nothing objectionable in the Chairman's action, and Mr Sanson spoke in the same strain. Decreased Attendance. — On the motion of Mr Bridge, it was resolved that an application be sent to the Department for a grant to assist the Board in the loss they had sustained through the falling off of attendance owing to the prevalence of epidemics during the June quarter. Notice of Motion. — Mr Hurley gave notice of motion as follows: — "That a circular be sent to each teacher in charge of a school requiring that on and after the Ist October next the first five minutes of school, morning and afternoon, be daily deyoted to the physical exercise of all scholars and pupil teachers, and intimating that no infant department will be considered satisfactorily managed where such exercise does not form part of the daily routine of work." Grant of School Reserve.— Mr Fry moved that school reserve No. 13, in the Feilding district, be granted to Mr Knebitfc on the usual terms.
