The Feilding Star. Published Daily. TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 1893. The Frozen Meat Trade
The work which has been done in France and Germany, and other parts of Europe, by Mr Geddes, who holds the responsible position of Manager of the Pastoral Financial Association of New South Wales, is worthy of more than mere passing notice. He has given an impetus to the frozen meat trade which must have the most happy results for this, as well as other colonies which are in a condition to supply the necessary stock. Admitting that the military authorities have evinced especial interest in the trade and its development primarily because they have in view the possible contingency of an European war in the near future, yet, after all, that calamity may, by wise councils, be averted, and another period of j peace be inaugurated. Whatever happens, however, the new markets opened up in the meantime for this branch of colonial produce, must effect for the better of all kindred interests. The value of pastoral land will not only be augmented, but tons of thousands of acres, now in a natural state, will be brought into cultivation, and a vast reliof be thus afforded to the congested labor market. With the prosperity of the farmers, whether agricultural or pastoral, all other classes of the industrial community are prosperous. Already the frozen meat trade has been a great factor in raising Nsw Zealand to tho highly creditable position she holds as regards her commercial prosperity, and it is our sincere wish that the sister colonies may equally benefit. If tho cloud of depression, which now hangs so heavily over them, be dispelled by the sun of prosperity, arising from a trade in which they all are equally interested, and must all be equally benefited, the day when a Customs union and intercolonial freetrade is possible, cannot be far distant. We congratulate the colony of New South Wales on the possession of so useful a settler as Mr Geddes, and trust that his enterprise will have all the Buccess which it so richly deserves.
