The Feilding Star. Published Daily. MONDAY, JULY 31, 1893. A Disgrace to England
«. The scene in the House of Commons as depicted in our cablegrams last Saturday, is quite unparalleled in English History. It is true Bishop Burnett, in his history of his own times, give an account of " The Drunken Parliament " of Scotland which sat on the Ist January, 1681, and passed a measure which brought disaster in its train. But it was the fashion to get drunk in those days, more especially on the initial day of the year. People from the highest to the lowest were bruoalised by continued wars and bloodshed, while the licentiousness of the age was notorious, therefore little in the way of decency could be expected of them. In the year of Our Lord, 1893, we live in an age of professed civilization, great culture, high morality, and when drunkenness is no longer the fashion in high places. It has been, until last Saturday, the pride and pleasure of all the English speaking races, to look upon the British House of Commons as the embodiment of all the virtues, and the living evidence of what high class civilization can do for a God fearing people. It was admitted that there were a few men elected of the people who were unworthy representatives, but at the same time it was also admitted there were spots on the sun, and it was inevitable in the natural order of things that the House of Commons could not be absolutely free from imperfections. But no one in these colonies ever imagined that a scene of such a disgraceful character as that now under consideration could have been enacted. As to the causes which led up to the incident we have nothing to do. Our simple duty is to condemn the actors who were so weak and at the same time so evilly disposed as to allow their wicked passions, excited by political rancour, to obtain such a complete mastery over them.
