Social at Colyton
A large number of Colyton residents took advantage of the bright evening last night to attend the social given in the Colyton Hall. The programme commenced with the hymn " Marching to Zion," from Sankey, by a strong choir led by Mr Pearce, followed by a prayer by the Rev Mr Clement, who was presiding. The Chairman made a few opening remarks, referring to the advantages of social gatherings and then Miss Garlick rendered a pianoforte solo with taste and feeling. Mr £. Humphrey recited an amusing piece entitled " A Woman of Mind " and was deservedly applauded. "He wipes the tear from every eye " was nicely sung by Miss Shortali, accompanied on the piano by Miss E. Shortali, and Mr Gould's reading "A week of practice" wa» well received, as also was Miss Mexted's pianoforte solo. MrT. A. Smith's elocutionary powers were well displayed in the' recitation " The execution of Montrose " and at the end he was deservedly applauded. Mr Clement's reading "Things I would not choose " was very interesting. Mr O. Pleasant's solo " The half has never been told," accompanied on the piano by Miss Pleasants, was well sung. During the evening the choir sang, from Children's Hosanna, "Sweet Chiming Bells," "Marching on," "The Soul's sweet home," and " God be with you." The orchestra consisted of organ, Miss Fraser ; violin, Messrs Simpson and Groves ; picolo, Mr Jas. Watson. Refreshments were handed round and full justice was done to the good things provided ty tl»e laxlies. Votes of thanks were passed, on the motion of Mr T. A. Smith, seconded by Mr Gould, to those who had so kindly contributed to the success of the gathering. Mr Clement stated that plans for the new church at Colyton were being prepared, and its erection on a section given by Mr Smith next to the Hall, would be pushed on with all possible dispatch. Half the proceeds of the Social were to be devoted to the new church and half to the circuit fund.
