Witchcraft Amongst the Maoris

FURTHER PARTICULAKS. (per press association.) Auckland. July 21. The Star's Bussell correspondent reports having made enquiry by wire into the alleged Maori witchcraft case, and frcm the result he believes there was no truth in the police report. Constable Moore, of Whangarei, has gone to Kaikohe to investigate the report of the deaths from alleged witchcraft by Piao, a Maori Tohunga. The remedy consisted ot stripping the patients naked, who were then put into a scalding bath till the skin peeled off in some cases, and then cooled off in the open air. Another remedy was the application of boiling hot mashed potatoes and pumpkins to the bare skin. Eight deaths have occurred, it is alleged, through the treatment, ranging from an infant six months old to young persons 14 years old, in the Ngunguru district alone. The Maoris hold a meeting at Kaikohe shortly to consider what steps should be taken with the Tohunga.
