The French Difficulty with Siam

The French Government demand territory in Siam on tbe left bank of the Mekong, with the islands, and claims the revenue derived from the fisheries in Battambang and Angkor until tbe indemnities, both priyate and public, are paid. France also olaim* tbe occupation of the Siamese forts, I as a guarantee of safe anchorage, pending tbe settlement of tbe matters in dispute. July 20. Sir Chas. Dilke, in an inter? iew with tbe representative of La Figaro, said he foresaw no difficulty with respect to Siam, unless France attempted annex* ation. Speaking of tbe dispute in Newfoundland, he said there was great cause for anxiety. Hong Kono, July 20. The general opinion ih that China is disposed to bold Siam. London, July 20. Viscount Curzon, in a lettor to the Times, states if France claims tbo entiro left bank of the Mekong it will deprive Siam of half of her territory, and be a means of placing the French in Upper Siam in juxtaposition to tlio British protected States. The Times insists that France cannot thus bo allowed to close the door to British trade in South-wcst-tru China,
