The French Difficulty with Siam
THE FRENCH PRESS EXCITED, A MERCHANT VESSEL SUNK. (FEB press association). London, July 18. The Times says the Bankok traders are in a state of panic, owing to a doubt as to whether Great Britain is willing tc allow her interests to be destroyed. Speaking in the House of Lords, Lord Roseberry said the Government was fully sensible as to the grave importance of the independence and integrity of Siam, which France professed to respect. Paris, July 18. The Siamese Fort sank a merchant vessel because she was piloting the war ship up the Menam River. The French Government deny thai they disowned the action of Aduiira Humann in entering the river with hii warships. The Parisian press is violently irritated and declares that Great Britain is trying to exercise a veiled protection over Siam The Figaro says the French Colonia Oflico will demand a concession of the entire left bank of the Mekong river, tin provinces of Battamburg and Angkor and also tho payment of un indemnity t< the relatives of tho victims of the recent massacre by tho Siamese.
