Kiwitea Road Board

(The larger portion of this report appeared in Saturday's issue.) The following business was transacted after we went to press on Saturday last. With reference to Mr Chamberlain's request re the expenditure of his thirds, the Clerk was instructed to write that they be spent as desired. Proposed by Warden Powell, seconded by Warden Morton, that the following names be placed on the rate roll : That of A. R. Cox in lieu of 3. H. Brock, for sections 34, 35, and 39, Ongo; and that of H. JBucknell in place of J. H. Harris, for sections 30 and 42, Block XII, Apiti.— Carried. Proposed by Warden Morton, seconded by Warden Reid, That tenders be called for cutting a drain on Terrace road, to drain the swampy portion, and make it passable at a cost not exceeding £20. Proposed by Warden Morton, seconded by Warden Reid, That this Board object to Ferry and Road Reserve 108, Block XIV, Apiti, being leased unless the proceeds are handed over to this Board, as a bridge is urgently required, and the proceeds of this reserve should be devoted towards this bridge ; and that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Commissioner of Crown Lands. — Carried. Resolved, That Mr Rink's tender for metalling on Sinclair's line, accepted by the Engineer and Mr Williamson be confirmed. Proposed by Warden Reid, seconded by Warden Morton, That the Engineer go over the road referred to in Mr McGregor's letter, and report at next meeting of the Board what is best to be done. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Morton, seconded by Warden Jones, that a committee for the management of the Birmingham Cemetery be appointed, such committee to consist of the Apiti, Kimbolton, Oroua, and Makino Wardens, with power to draw up bye-laws, to be submitted at the Board's next meeting. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Reid, seconded by Warden Morton, That the Engineer be instructed to put a footbridge across the Kiwitea stream on the Mangamako road, at a cost not exceeding £12. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Reid, seconded by Warden Williamson, that the Secretary fully explain to Mr Bruce the Board's position with the Commissioner re thirds, and ask him to interview the Colonial Treasurer in reference to tue same, urging that a settlement be come to. — Carried* Proposed by Warden Reid, seconded by Warden Williamson, that the Secretary write Mr Bruce to use his influence in getting the Government to place a sum on the estimates to fall and form a road through the Pakihikura Valley Reserve. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Morton, seconded by Warden Powell, That Mr Tompkins be informed, that owing to the heavy debt in that Ward, the Board is unable to undertake any new work in that Ward. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Powell, seconded by Warden Norton, That the Secretary write Mr Bennett, that as the removal of the said drain is for his benefit, he is at liberty to do so under the Engineer's supervision. — Carried. The Board instructed the Engineer, that when suitable metal was obtainable, it was to be screened. Messrs Oldershaw, Cornish, H. C. Levett, and R. Taylor, junr., of Beaconsfield, wrote to the Board, calling attention to the dangerous condition at the crossing of the Kiwitea stream, and stating that during the late floods the ford has been almost impassable owing to a bank of shingle being deposited there, and a deep hole scoured out, and that already there have been one or two narrow escapes from serious accidents. The matter was left with the Engineer to deal with. Mr Atkinson waited on the Board on behalf of himself and several other settlers, who objected to their third being spent in constructing Nos. 1 and 2 bridges over the Pahikikura stream, as they wished the money to be spent in widening the track instead of on bridges. Proposed by Warden Powell, seconded by Warden Morton, that the Secretary write Mr Frazer offering him £4 an acre compensation for widening the road in the Ongo Block, and if he declines this offer the Board propose to take the land under the Public Works Act. — Carried. The matter of the destruction of Mr Parker's fence by' the contractor employed on the Northern line was referred to the Engineer to deal with. Proposed by Warden Williamson, seconded by Warden Reid, That the Engineer be instructed to obtain a screw jack and screen for road use. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Reid, seconded by Warden Morton, that Doherty's tender at £20 11s for Junction road j that of J. McDonald at £15 for Mangapipi road be accepted; and that the tenders for bridges on the Manga* mako and Pahikikura roads be held over. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Reid, seconded by Warden Williamson, that the Board agree to the deviation on the Mangapipi road through Mr Powell's section, on his paying for the survey and transfer fees, on the completion of the same. — Carried. Proposed by Warden Jones seconded by Warden Morton, That Mr Morton be given authority to call the first meeting of the Cemetery Committee, and draw up rules. — Carried. The names of fourteen ratepayers were drawn by ballot, to be summoned before next sitting of the Board if their rates were still in arrears. The monthly accounts were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned;
