COLONEL BAILEY AND CAPTAIN STEVENS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sib,—Enclosed you will find a copy of a letter which was sent by me to the Bangitikei Advocate, and which was duly published by them. Yesterday I received a letter from a resident in Feilding asking me, as the statements were made in Feilding, if I would send a copy of it to you for publication, in order to clear exCaptain Stevens of the charge of lying and dishonesty which has been laid upon him. Hoping you will give the matter publicity. I am, etc., E. Hunt. Marion, July 15th, 1893. (To the Editor of the Advocate.) Sir, —l Bee by last night's issue of your paper that Colonel Bailey has been making an explanation of the dispute between himself and Captain Stevens. Now, there are just two remarks of the Colonel's in the said explanation to which I should liko to refer. Firstly, he said that Captuin Stevens never reported to the newspapers that he (Col. Bniley) paid a visit to Marton in order to try and settle the matter. Well, Sir, whether it was reported or not, I think I am correct in stating that the Captain mentioned it at the public meeting called by him, in which ho said the Colonel held a short Army meeting, after which they (the Colonel and the Captain) had a very long interview. The second charge is a more serious one, viz., that Captain Stevens took iB Is from the corps, of wbich he would give no account to the treasurer." I do not know where the Colonel got his information from, but he has evidently been misinformed by someone, and I wish to state, in justice to Captain Stevens, that he gave me a stamped receipt for £8 7b being the amount of special collection taken up by him for travelling expenses. Trusting you will make the abore explanation public. I am, etc., E. Hunt, Acting Treasurer. Marton, July 13th, 1393.
