Ashurst Notes

The traffic road through the Manawatu Gorge was cleared of slips to-day. There have been 17 men at work on them since the ram. There were also 25 slips on the Gorge railway Hue, some big, and some small, and a strong gang has been at work there. The Foresters' Hall is to bo opened on Friday with a social, and the usual rejoicings. Brothers are expected to attend from other Lodges. Messrs Uinimor and Groven are making good progress with the building of tho Public Hall. Tho two shops in front aro let, one as a music warehouse. It is expocted that a room overhead in this Hall will be ÜBed for a club room. There is already a chess club, audit is proposed to * add a reading room and debating club. Something of the sort is very much needed. A large number of fellows come in on Saturdays from all quarters, if ■ their parents wero to ask Ashurst what she did for these young fellows, she could only point at present to her 5 hotels and billiard rooms. The number of ownerless dogs about Ashurst has been on tho increase lately, on Saturday some of them went to Messrs Whibley's farm, about 4 o'clock in the moruing, and killed 4 lambs and one ewe. On Wednesday about 1 a.m. a great barking was hoard, three dogs were worying the ewes, and thov killed four and mangled others, the full amount of damage is not yet known, one dog was shot by Mr Whitley in the act. Constable Watty of Palmerston came up to report on the event, and see| the dog. Mr Warne also hud a sheep killed in the same way. It necessitates watching every night.
