The Vacant Portfolio
SIR GFORGE GREY'S OPINION. fPer Press Associasion.j Auckland, July 11. Sir George Grey has been interviewed on the subject of filling the vacant portfolio. He expressed himself strongly of opinion that the appointment should be left entirely in the hands of Ministers. The advisability of a conference of Auckland members on the subject having been suggested, Sir George Grey said he did not think the course a wise one, because the Auckland members if able to agree upon a man, might be placed in an awkward position of having their selection rejected by Ministers. On the whole, he thought the matter might very fairly be left in. the hands of Ministers. Sir George would not express a definite opinion as to the merits of the respective candidates for the portfolio. As to Mr William Kelly's claim to the Native Portfolio on tho score of experience in Native matters, Sir George said it was quite a mistake to say that a man should have the prior claim on this ground or be better fitted to discharge the duties of the office equitably and justly. In his experience the contrary had rather been the case.
