Arbor Day 1893
It having been decided by the Government to observe Friday, the 4th of August next, as a public holiday in all public offices, for tbe purpose of planting trees and sbrub3 in suitable public places, and for the observance of such ceremonies as are suitable to the general character of the occasion, we make the following extracts from the circular forwarded to us by the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Sir John 1). Ritchie. It is requested that the residents of the town and district will on the day appointed plant trees and flowers, aud seeds, about their houses and farms, on all public reserves, and along high ways. It is intended to extend the interest shown last year and make the movement a colonial one, nnd it is hoped the teachers and pupils ol the schools will take an especially active interest in the proceedings of the clay. The local authorities are also invited to interest themselves and do their best to muke the matter a success. It is suggested tbat the Borough Council shall have the general conduct and direction of the general proceedings, each Council to appoint a marshall and as many deputies as he may require. The sites for planting should be determined upon at tbe earliest possible moment, and arrangements mado for having the holes properly dug for receiving the trees. The attendance of as many professional gardeners as possible should be obtained to assist and direct the planting, so that the trees may obtain a proper start. Tbis ia all important. Presents of suitable trees should be invited betoreband. We have had one very successful Arbor Day iv Foilding and we hope aod trust tbe one now approaching will be a still greater success. The advantages of promoting forest growth, tbe culture of trees and their preservation at all stages, are so patent that further commont on the aubjoct is unnecessary. Wo would suggest that as tho Borough Council will have no regulnr meeting before August 4th at which the subject could be discussed (the Council will hold a special mooting on tho 27th instant and thoir regular monthly meeting on Thursday August 3rd) our respected Mayor call a special meeting at a date prior to that of tbe 27th instant, in order to take such steps as tho Council may deem advisablo for the furtherance of ao desirable an object.
