Eighty per cent of the retail shopkeepers in Dunedin have signed a petition against a compulsory half -holiday on Saturday, We regret to learn of the death at the Auckland Hospital, on Thursday last, of Mr Luks, of the Victoria Hotel. The deceased was a very old and highly respeoted resident, well-known to those on the Otago and West Coast in the early days. Mr Luks for some years was the commercial manager of the West Coast Times, aud was a gentleman of superior culture aud most estimable qualities.
