Shannon Notes

Anyone visiting Shannon from time to time cannot but be struck with the go-ahead appearance of that township, ■especially within the last few months. Several new buildings have lately been erected, the most striking in appearance being a nice two-storied store and dwelling house combined, whioh Mr O'Connor, from Greytown, has built in Ballance street. The store seems well stocked in every line, and doubtless Mr O'Connor will receive a fair measure of support. Mr Richardson has just finished a butcher's shop in Ballance street, and appears to be doing a good business.. Although it seems rather premature, it is nevertheless a fact that Shannon is to have tbe benefit of a newspaper, as Mr W. C. Nation, of Greytown, has decided to commence operations there, some of the timber for his offices being now on the ground. I believe Mr Nation intends publishing as a bi-weekly, and it is to be hoped he will receive the support ho deserves. Some enterprising person is erecting a tobacconist's shop and billiard saloon next to Mr Nations section. Business people seem to think Ballance street will be the street in Shannon, and some pretty tall prices are being asked for sections in and near it. As much as £150 being refused recently for a jacre section. For a township of the sizo of Shannon, the Club is a remarkably commodious and well fitted -up hotel, and the host, Mr G. Broadbent, spares no pains in providing for tbe oomfort of the travelling public. There is some talk of a creamery being erected in Shannon, and it is expected that the settlers will not let it remain at talk, but use their best endeavours to bring tbe project to a successful issue, as there is no doubt but what it would be a great boon to the place, and a few industries of like importance would result in Shannon becoming a rising and prosperous little town. .
