The Pohangina Board :nvitos tenders, to be addressed to the Chairman, at Feilding, on or before Saturday. Julr Bth, for the maintenance of roads for 12 months in No 1 Ward. Specifications may be seen at the Board's office. To Derby belongs the honor of electiug women as Poor Law Guardians. Miss Slack, a worthy woman of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, was recently elected to that office, gaining 898 votes, whilst her opponents, Or Hooper and Mr Beastall, had only 861 and 58 votes respectively. Several Pohangina settlers waited on Mr Baker, Commissioner of Crown Lands yesterday in reference to maps of the Salisbury Block, Pohangina. It was stated to Mr Baker that a charge of 7s 6d for the plans had been demanded, but the Commissioner assured the deputation that no charge would be made. As an inset to-day Mr J, C. Morey publishes a list of a few of the lines he is now selling at the Bon March (s. in Fergusson Street. These goods were purchased in a cheap market at Sydney and Mr Moray has determined to give his customers the full benefit of the extra* ordinary bargains he obtained there. Commenting on the sale of the Pohan* gioa town sections held here jeeterday the Standard sajs it afforded good evidence of the estimation in which that rising township is held. Really enormous prices were realised for someof the sections, in fact sections in the Square id Palmers* ten did not realise that price a few years ago. The danger of the drain in Manchester street, above the school bouse, was demonstrated last night. As a yottoy lady was trying to find her way aoross a foot bridge to the front gate she had the misfortune to fall into the ditch, which was full of water. It iii time this dangerous drainwasfilled up to prevent other or more dangerous accidents.
The owners of sheep which are carried by rail have just cause for complaint in the iilthy condition of the trucks, which do not appear to be cleaned from one year's end to the other, It is quite possible that infected sheep which naye been crrried in these truoka, may leave behind them germs sufficient to similarly infect dean sheep put in the same trucks after wards. Householders who have sllowed their stocks of firewood to run low, are expert enciog great difficulty m replenishing their supplies, owing to the inability ot carters obtaining access into the outlying bush, as settlers will not allow their land to be cut up any more than can be avoided during this wet season. Consequently a run on the coal supplies may be looked forward to, and householders will do well to provide for ooutiugencies. 80 far the whalers at Tory Channel have not had the best of luck, for although the whales are numerous and are sighted every day passing through the Strait, the weather has been against the boats. The luck seems to hare taken a turn lately for it is reported that on Monday laxt the men succeeded in get* ting a sin til whale (expected to j?o three tuns) and on Friday they obtained another about the same size. The second fish wat killed off Geordie'a Hock* and was being towed into Te Awaiti as the Torea entered the Bay. The second whale gave some trouble, and one of the crew of the " Maori Girl " was thrown out with bis oar. The bost was struck at the bows and the damage took some time to repair.
