The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, JULY 6, 1893. The Financial Statement
Unquestionably the figures in the Financial Statement delivered on j Tuesday night by the Colonial Treasurer, the first part of which we published yesterday, show that during the past year the colony has been exceptionally prosperous. The Treasurer was, in our opinion, quite justified in saying that they disclosed a condition of things unequalled in the history of the colony. The revenue for the year from all sources substantially exceeds the estimate, while the expenditure has been kept£4B,7l9 below. Only two items of revenue failed to come up to the amounts estimated, namely, Marine was short by £436, and territorial revenue did not reach the estimate by £4680. In the majority of the departments there has been a saving. The railway revenue exceeded the estimate by £34,099 but the expenditure to obtain this over-ran the vote by £14,362, but as it was estimated there would be a j net gain of £435,086 for the year, j and £444.823 was actually obtained, an extra profit of nearly £20,000 was made. The proposals for the current year have been framed with a view to strict economy. The estimated ex* penditure is put down at £4,408,371, or £8304 less than last year.
