A Building Society for Feilding
A well attended meeting of business men, convened by Mr E. Goodbehere, was held at the Manchester Hotel on Tuesday evening lust, for the purpose of considering the above subject. Mr Goodbehere was voted to the chair. The chairman, m opening the proceedings, stated that he thought all present were aware that it was desirable that a building society should be formed in Feilding. These societies were good investments and were of great advantage, and benefit, to borrowers, and to the in>, habitants of a town generally. .. Mr Kirton said that some years ago he was interested in a similar, proiect, but many things, militated against, the. idea being brought to a. successful issu.e, owing to those who took the matter tip not pulling together. The society in Palmerston had proved a great success, and be believed that the rapid progress, of that town was owing to it. ■ '-' Mr Eirton then proposed, and Mr Richmond seconded, a resolution to the effect that this meeting is ol opinion that it is desirable that a building society be formed in Feilding. — Carried; The seconder, in speaking to the resolution, stated that there were many people about here who were waiting for, the opportunity of erecting houses, and such a society would meet the case,. Mr Bastings considered that the society ' should be a permanent and not a ter. ruinating one. As ttn investment it should return 10 per cent.; borrowers also would be benefitted, and people would be able to live in good houses whieb ! would be their own property. >■; \>> '■ Mr Cooper then proposed, and Mr ' Kirton seconded, That a committee of { five (with power to add to their number) ] be appointed to draw up a report to be ' presented at a meeting to be oulled within the next six weeks. ■■ '.
