c The Manchester Rifles will hold a company parade this evening. All noncommiri(«ioned officers are specially re* quested to attend. An explosive which seems destined to take the place of pouder in the German artillery lifts been successfully tried. It explodes neither by a blow, n wiiock. nor a spark, but by the introduction of a fresh substance. The explosive is almust smokeless, and produces very little detonation. M. Tnrpin, of Paris, has invented a mitrailleuse, capable of projecting a hundred thousand missiles a dutance of two wiles in a quarter of an honr. The following are the subjects en which candidates for the position of noncommissioned officers are examined upon t (a) Sqnad drill with and without arms ; (b) Company drill in close and extended order, including a thorough knowledge of the positions and duties of markers ; (c) E>t»t»e« of m. eomm*aJ«r of > fraa.rA. and the posting and relief of sentries ; (d) Carbine or short rifle exercises ; (c) Be able to fill in a parade state, guard report, target practice and judging distance register, ana to write orders from dictation ; (f) Aiming and position drill, and a thorough acquaintance of orders to be observed on rifle ranges.
