Live Stock in the United states
+. Now (says the Live Stock Journal) that the full text of the report of the American Department of Agriculture on live stock in the United States is to hand, some light in thrown upon the figures showing a decrease in cattle for the first time since records were kept, and the great decline in the number ot pigs. On January 1 , 1893, the cattle numbered 52,378,283, as compared with 54,067,290 at the beginning of 1892, showing a decrease ot 1,689,307. As there was a slight increase in milch cows, the decline is among the other cattle, and chiefly, it appears, among stores on the ranges. It is attributed by the statistician to, the prolonged prevalence of low prices. As to the extraordinary fall in the nunrber of pigs, from 52,398,019 in 1892, to 46,094,---807 in J893, it is accounted for by the excessively wet weather of last spring, through which numbers of young pigs were lost. He points out, how* ever, that pi^s are so prolific, and so quickly brought to maturity, that recuperation may be as rapid as the decline was, if prices keep up.
