The Feilding Star. SATURDAY,. JUNE 10. 1833.
TnE Inangnhua election is over, nnd Sir Robert Stout has been returned by an overwhelming majority. Wheth er his presence in the House will strengthen the Ministerial pnr'y ia open to question, because autocratic as be no doubt is, the Hon Richard c-eddon ha« also a trill of his own, and is less likely now to submit to die tation than at any previous period of his career. Of course we cannot tell whether or not a portfolio will he ' found for the now member, but wo know that in either case Sir Hubert Stout will not permit himself to re ; main long in the back ground, from bis natural force of character, and 1 his constant desire to j>o*e before the public in some attitude or other. As he is not too discreet, we shall not be surprised if his irrepressibility does not bring him into conflict with the members of his " party," who are not likely to " bow their heads in reverence " to receive any yoke the recent addition to their ranks will assuredly attempt to put on them It will bo interesting to watch the results, which may be almost anticipated. ! A West Coast (South Island) vxchange ■ informs us that on the first duy of 1 June a new insurance tariff" dime into vogue which meant an average reducI tion of from 15 to 20 per cent on the previous premium tariff 1 . In anticipation of this concession large lines were I nogociated for by business people, and 1 therefore the reduced rates will probably mean an extensive increase in 1 the aggregate covers. The amended • tariff, which will mean a saving of I about £1500 a-year to the insuring I public, is received with general saiis- | faction, although there are those who hold tlint the original requisition for a ! reduction of 30 per cent should have been insisted upon. There is much ! need of similar steps being taken in ; Feilding with the view of getting a [ reduction in tho rates.
In our correspondence column " Jonah up to Date " makes a very useful suggestion. He proposes that, to enliven the dulness of the winter eyenings, a series of " sixpenny pops " be given by onr local amateurs, the proceeds to be devoted to some charitable, or other deserving, object. We may Bay with " Jonah " that no moro popular entertainments have ever been given in England, and other parts of the world, than these, and we hope the idea will bo carried out to a successful termination in Feilding.
Tbe ©leciion of Mr A. D. Willis for Wanganuiby such a substantial majority, i- a distinct victory for tbo Government It indicator, at tbo fame time, tbat tbo apathy of the opposition i* not confined o the electors ot Ilangitikei and Palmers ton North elect oratos.
